The soccer world cup in South Africa next year will have 10 times the carbon impact than the benchmark 1996 German soccer world cup. That is the headline. The reality? Air travel accounts for 67% of the footprint for next year’s tournament. The German event didn’t include air travel in its totals. Dublin to Johannesburg is 9415 kilometers.
