I don’t think digital technology has been as useless in Iran as this Slate article suggests but it does highlight some of the problems. My two main issues with the Twitter coverage of Iran is sifting through the repeated stories and knowing whom to trust and who is over-reacting or actively spreading disinformation for malicious or humorous reasons. I was often asked to change my Twitter location and timezone to Iran even though it had been shown to have no effect. I am impressed, if appalled, the Iranian government has used crowd-sourcing to identify people. §
