via Mícheál Ó Foghlú comes this wonderful article in the NYTimes on taxonomy. I like to think this is the article’s better title; How to tell the carrot from the cat — which to grate and which to pet? It really begins in the end; a convincing argument that as we lose our ability to recognise, and name, one from another we lose our ability to see change and what is happening around us. Not so important is that we agree on the name or know the official name but rather that we simply name it. §

Twitter will be adding geo-location meta-data to each tweet in the near future. This is good news even though it will be opt-in and only available through the API for now. The thinking must be that adding it to the website has little value as most location information will come in through mobile Twitter clients using the API. Desktop browsers are still largely ignorant of their location even with SkyHook and co. I’d be interested to see how Twitter accounts like @cnnbrk (CNN Breaking News, 2.6 million followers) use this. Will they pass through the location of each story to the tweet? I hope so. Opting out on a per-Tweet basis will be important though tricky to deal with in UI terms. This feature though will enrich the Twitter data-stream and open doors to further data-mining. It also shows that Twitter is open to adding further meta-data to Tweets. §

PicPosterous really is the fastest and simplest way of getting photos from your iPhone to the web. Take a picture and it saves it to an automatically generated Posterous account. You can then merge it with your existing Posterous account. §

I love how Africa is one big country and can be molded to anyone’s needs. The Serengeti is in Tanzania (with a bit in Kenya) and is on the other side of the continent to Angola, mentioned in this Angolan Simpsons post. Angola has its own African tree and elephant scenes. §

Sonar Ruler turns your iPhone into a bat or dolphin. It emits sharp clicks, times how long it takes for the clicks to bounce back and gives you a measurement. Amazing. I’d suggest they rename to Sonic Ruler though. §
