I had no idea Arecibo used RADAR to map asteroids. The thrust of the article though is about how the switch from analogue to digital is hurting our chances of being discovered by aliens because digital signals are more evenly spread than analogue. §

I listen to broadcast radio 30 minutes a day while driving to and from work. That is the only time I listen to radio. I don’t think user-voted playlists are the way to go. If I were asked how to improve it I’d say cut out the repeats (play music I haven’t heard every other morning of the week), play full-length songs, play songs in two to three song blocks (not one song and then 5 minutes of DJs talking), cut down DJ ramblings, cut the number of phone-in competitions (I want music, not some chap from Donegal with a head-cold) and no more 30-second jingles. I don’t mind the adverts much. §

I’m puzzled as to how the superconductor “remembers” its position to the magnetic track? Some degree of force is set during the cooling period and then remains until the superconductor warms up? §

I’m all too happy that the internet is seen as a vital utility, like “water and gas”, but I think too much emphasis is placed on speed (broadband) and not enough on pervasiveness and robustness. I want an internet connection available anywhere on Earth before I want 100mbps to my fixed router at home. §
