I am however disappointed that Facebook is not even attempting to solve real world vanity URL problems. There is more than one person named Kevin Rose on Facebook. What URL is the second Kevin Rose going to get; facebook.com/kevinrose2? Same problem free email providers (chris817281@hotmail.com), Twitter (bob_1211) and every other service has with vanity URLs. §

One interesting aspect of Facebook allowing you to buy a vanity URL is that you establish a verified name system. Not foolproof but better than the free name claiming that goes on at Twitter, WordPress.com and other sites. If someone buys the name of someone else then there is a verifiable, through the credit card used to pay, method of correcting the problem. Of course, we should all just buy our own domains instead, not give money over to a centralised system like Facebook. You can then point your domain at your Facebook URL if you so wish. §

Interesting tidbit in Tom Raftery’s Electricity 2.0 talk. Every electrical device has a unique energy signature. Smart meters can measure these signatures. We could map homes this way, what devices you own and when you use them. This chap tweets his electricity usage, even differentiating through electrical signals when his phone rings. §

Good find Paul. Just the thing we’ve been looking for on our (soon to be launched) Tramore school campaign.

RSS feeds are still painfully obtuse for most users to subscribe to. Click blue RSS button, select RSS, copy URL, go to Google Reader, click Add a Subscription, paste URL and it might just work. Frustrating we haven’t progressed. §

The big blue tabs on the updated O2.ie site are quite nice. Some other nice touches and the navigation has been improved. This is just a change in wrapper though, the core functionality is all the same. §
