Rapleaf crunch the numbers on Amazon EC2 vs. co-lo. I think the “co-lo is cheaper” conclusion is too simple. A mix of co-lo for your permanent, 365/24/7 needs and EC2 capabilities for your ramp-up needs is best. You don’t need 2000 machines 365/24/7 so don’t pay for them at your co-lo. (via Justin Mason.)

yes but you have a roof on your gaff that cost say 10 grand to put on would one buy the nessacery soler pannels to do the job for say 35 k but would have a next to 0 carbon count and little or no engery costs so would that make sence

We definitely looked at the mixed approach. However, shipping a 2TB dataset to EC2 (and getting the results back) gets to be a miserable proposition when you’ve only got a 100Mbps internet connection.
