Does Ireland do newspaper boys? Fiona and I were just trying to find out if we can get the Irish Times delivered to our door every morning. It doesn’t look like they do. Weird. I thought every country in the world had newspaper boys.

Over 2 million people have shelled out $49.99 for Gears of War II in its first few days. That is insane, I would never have said the gaming industry would have got this big back when I was playing Commander Keen or Doom.

Oh sod it. Keith reports that FOWA is coming to Dublin on the 6th of March 2009. That is the one conference I really, really wanted to attend but I’ll be in South Africa during March. Bugger.

“Hypermilling” is Oxford’s “word of the year” but I think “2.0″ should have been the word/phrase of the year. It has entered the mainstream. Anything “next gen” or anything that breaks from the traditions of the past gets “2.0″ tacked on. Electricity 2.0. Government 2.0. Family 2.0. Love 2.0. The first extra-solar Earth like planet? Earth 2.0.

Jason Fried of 37Signals gives a good talk on “teach to sell.” Or “share to sell.” He likens it to chefs on TV sharing their knowledge and you then heading for the nearest book store to buy their books/pots/pans/knives/sauces. Jason may not like this comparison but it is very similar to what motivational speakers do. They share their “life tips” and you then buy their videos/books/super-socks. Parallel to this would be sports stars who “play to sell.” You see them winning with their custom Ping driver and you go out and buy it to improve your golf game. Fascinating.

Rumour: Extortionists (not contortionists) AT&T may charge $30 a month for official iPhone tethering, with a 5gb cap. PDANet on jailbroken phones works fine (but I imagine AT&T will get more strict with unofficial tethering from now on.)

O2 Ireland have launched a new online messaging center. The WebText and Address Book are greatly improved. However they also lost/deleted all my old WebText contacts.

Events on LinkedIn is the first truly useful feature of LinkedIn. Something that would keep me coming back and interacting with other users. A shame the URL is so awful (http://linkedin.com/events/ireland should work, but doesn’t.)
